Merck announced that the US FDA had granted Breakthrough Therapy designation to enpatoran (TLR 7/8 inhibitor) for the treatment of lupus with active cutaneous manifestations.
The FDA Breakthrough Therapy designation was supported by results from the Phase 2, WILLOW study, which demonstrated meaningful symptoms improvement, particularly among patients with active cutaneous manifestations.
The trial used an innovative basket and adaptive study design including patients with both CLE and SLE.
Merck recently initiated the ELOWEN 1 and ELOWEN 2 studies, evaluating the therapy’s impact on both cutaneous and systemic symptoms in patients with lupus and potential links between skin and systemic disease activity.
